Carnival in
Mönchengladbach
Carnival is
been celebrated in Mönchengladbach since the middle of the 19th century.
Over the decades certain traditions and customs emerged: the indoor
festivities (sessions and balls) and, of course, the street carnival,
culminating in the grand parade on Violet Tuesday.
Given its
Christian roots, the weekend when carnival is celebrated is determined
by the Church calendar: It takes place right before Ash Wednesday, which
in turn marks the beginning of Lent leading up to Good Friday and Easter.
Traditionally, the carnival season starts at 11:11h on November, 11th by
awaking the Hoppeditz, the ghost of carnival.
During the
Advent and Christmas period the carnival spirit is temporarily suspended
and picks up again in the first days of January.
Street
carnival, the so called "crazy days" and highlight of every season,
launches out on Thursday (Altweiber, Women’s Carnival Day) before Ash
Wednesday. Climax of this extended weekend ist the grand parade on
violet tuesday after which the carnival season comes to an end.
The Prinzengarde
The
Prinzengarde was founded in 1934 and due to our red and grey uniforms we
are lovingly called the extinguishers.
The
Prinzengarde is a non-profit-organisation acreddited by fiscal
authorities an we support other benificiant associations. Our Main
business according to our statutes is to support and promote the
rhenisch tradition, especially the carnival in Mönchengladbach.
Primarily we are the
royal guard of his majesty Prinz Karneval der Stadt Mönchengladbach an
we use to accompany him and his princess during his public appearances.
We perceive
ourself as a traditional carnival association and core of this
association are the uniformed members. Especially (prussian)
military traditions are turned upside down during carnival, so our
uniformed Members have ranks, we muster regularly and many other (partially
military) customs are retained.
The
uniformed members - our "active corps" - are divided into various
sections:
the
CavalryCorps
the
ArtilleryCorps
the
TanzCorps
the
ReserveCorps
the Military
Music Corps
and of
course our junior guard
Beside
accompanying prince and princess we arrange plenty of own events during
the whole year, for example our General-Appell (General Muster) or the
Prinzen-Biwak (Prince' Bivouac) during the carnival season and a bycicle
tour or a barbecue in summer.
We hope, we
could awake Interest for our association an look forward to welcome you
to one ouf our events.
Sincerly
yours
Prinzengarde
der Stadt Mönchengladbach e.V.
